Our house is a mighty fine house. But a mighty fine, old house in need of major repairs and major love. Finally, after living here for 10 years, some things are going to be happening. Nothing like a baby to force things along, I say. With the house updates happening within the next few months, you’ll see our house transfer bit by bit. I hope! Today I am sharing the things we already have planned and forming and sharing on the blog as they happen.
Soon this home will be transferred into our names, officially, so we can get a loan to do all those big transformations. Plus, some badly need new furniture and maybe even a new work car for Jason. We’ll see once we get to that point. You can guess I am most excited about the new furniture. The other things will be nice, though. For now, let’s dive into what house updates are already forming.
What House Updates You’ll Be Seeing Here Soon
This house was built in 1925. And it’s had weird add on’s and additions, as older homes do. Jason’s parents bought this home in the early ’70s when Jason was just a baby. Jason actually grew up in this house until he was 12. His parents kept the house thought and only rented it out to the family. We moved in 2011 and have been here since. And soon, it’ll be transferred into our very own name, and we’ll “officially” own the home. It’s needed a lot of work since we moved in, but nothing has happened with lack of time and money. And now things are moving and shaking.
Oh, you did see I’ve done some small updates in our bedroom, and I am hopeful of doing a few more soon too—especially a new mattress, which I’ll highlight here too. And I already mentioned the main floor guest room would transform into the baby’s room, so that’ll be a work in progress over the next few months. I wouldn’t think the actual work in there will take that long. Crossing fingers!
But for now, let’s look at the big things we’ve been working on getting moving around here.
New HVAC
We are finally getting rid of the old oil heater. It’s very daunting, but I know it’s needed. Plus, the lovely thought that I’ll never have to worry about running out of oil or wood throughout the winter is a lovely thought. We hope to use the wood heater still, too, but it won’t be a NEED like it was/has been. And the cherry on top, we’ll have A/C. Yippee. No more can’t stand the heat when that August temperature rises and our main floor feels like a sauna. Let’s not even talk about how the attic feels(our bedroom), but at least we have a window A/C up there.
We’ve got a few bids and awaiting one more before making our final decisions. I am pretty sure we’ll be going gas, and that is exciting too. I’ll let you all in those details as we get started on that project.
This will be probably our first project in our long list of things.
New Roof
The roof has been needed to be done for a couple of years. It’s not horrible by any means. We have no leaks that we know of, and looks okay. But it needs to be done. So we have gotten one bid thus far for it, and we will get at least two more before deciding how we’ll go for this one.
We are thinking though of having in some solar at the same time, but time will tell if we’ll go that route or not. It would be a nice addition, though.
And we’ll need to get new gutters once the roof is done. Ours have fallen off and are gosh-awful on what is left. It’s embarrassing.
Big project there.
Foundation/Porch
Our front porch is falling apart and has been. It’s been on our “list” for quite some time. There are soft spots in the wood & the one-side slants. We need to check the foundation at least under the porch area, if not the whole house. Then rebuild our front porch.
I would absolutely be giddy to extend our front porch to the full front of the house. Sadly, I don’t think we can do that, but it’s been in my mind for quite some time. It would give us a little bit more room for front porch sitting and entertaining.
That’s Our House Updates Now
Those are the main updates we know we are getting done now. Of course, there is still a lot we’d like to do and need to do. But that should give us a good base for now. Our main floor bathroom really needs to be redone too, we may get a new floor in for now but I don’t know.
The yard needs to be leveled and new grass put in. I’ve dreamed about a backyard patio as well. I know what I want and what it would look like, and I don’t think it would take much—just the matter of getting out all the weeds, rock, and yuck back there.
Hopefully, we’ll be able to do some of the yard projects this year too!
Stay tuned. Any thoughts on our upcoming updates? I’d love to hear them! Can’t wait to share as we do them all.
